Daily Skin Health
The Nutritional and Skin Experts at Advanced Nutrition Programme™ have developed the four fundamentals of skin health: antioxidants, vitamin A, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids.
One - Antioxidants
Antioxidants are molecules that fight free radicals in your body. Free radicals are molecules that can build up in skin cells, causing damage to DNA and collagen and destroying vitamins and nutrients. They are caused by various factors, including poor diet (too much sugar), blue light, air pollution, alcohol, and cigarette smoke. When your body has too many free radicals, it can lead to oxidative stress, an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants. This has a negative impact on the skin, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, pigmentation, and discolouration. While our bodies have their own antioxidant defences, we need to ensure we get a plentiful supply from our diet and supplements. Consuming the right vitamins and minerals effectively feeds your skin, helping to safeguard it from external stressors such as sun, stress, and pollution. Our skin researchers recommend adding antioxidants to your diet to help support the skin against further oxidative stress and free radicals.
Two - Vitamin A
Vitamin A is praised for its general benefits in supporting and maintaining healthy-looking skin. It helps to create a foundation of healthy skin and can maintain normal skin function when changes occur. Vitamin A is involved in the synthesis of hyaluronic acid and supports the normal production of moisture molecules in the skin. It also supports collagen formation, encouraging all skin cells to perform their normal roles. Food sources of vitamin A include beef liver, salmon, bluefin tuna, and sweet potatoes.
Three - Zinc
Zinc is a cofactor in an antioxidant enzyme and protects cells by stabilizing cell membranes and guarding against oxidative damage. Found in many of our supplements, zinc is a vital nutrient that plays a role in hundreds of biochemical reactions in the body, including digestion, immunity, and cognitive function. Since our bodies can't produce or store zinc, we need to consume it regularly. Research shows that zinc has multiple benefits for the skin, including promoting overall skin health and aiding in the production of new skin cells.
Four - Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for skin health due to their hydrating and soothing properties. As the building blocks of your skin's surface layers, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids play a fundamental role in retaining moisture and hydration levels. Increasing your omega intake has numerous health benefits, from supporting bone and joint mobility to improving sleep, reducing redness/inflammation, and enhancing mood.
These four fundamentals are recommended for all skin types, concerns, and ages for maintaining daily skin health.
How to Take Care of Your Skin
Understanding your skin type is crucial for effective daily skin health. There are four main skin types: Dry, Oily, Normal, and Sensitive. You can determine your skin type by observing the texture of your skin and how it reacts to certain products:
- Dry Skin: Appears flaky or patchy.
- Oily Skin: Appears shiny and feels oily to the touch.
- Normal Skin: Lacks clogged pores, sensitive areas, dryness, oiliness, or irritation.
- Sensitive Skin: Easily irritated or aggravated by-products.
